From Boston.com – December 2, 2013
It’s beginning to look a lot like Christmas around Boston. And the city is about to get a bit brighter with the official tree lighting in Boston Common on Dec. 5 from 6 – 8 p.m.
If you get to the area early, head over to Frog Pond, where you can see a figure skating show presented by The Skating Club of Boston at 5 p.m. This year will feature 2013 U.S. pair champions Marissa Castelli and Simon Shnapir, 2013 U.S. Men’s silver medalist Ross Miner, and Olympic hopeful Christina Gao.
WCVB TV will broadcast live from Boston Common with hosts Anthony Everett and JC Monahan, beginning at 7 p.m. Featured entertainment will include Boston’s own Joey McIntyre of New Kids on the Block, “American Idol” Season 11 finalist Erica Van Pelt, Blue Man Group, Nova Scotia band Squid Precision Drumming, Morning Star Baptist Church Gospel Choir, the Boston Ballet, the Boston Celtics official junior dance team LilPhunk, and Boston Red Sox representatives who will bring along the 2013 World Series trophy.
For the 42nd year, the 47-foot white spruce was donated by Nova Scotia. Mayor Thomas M. Menino and the Honourable Andrew Younger, Minister with the Government of Nova Scotia, will be joined by members of the Royal Canadian Mounted Police and Santa to flip the switch around 8 p.m. The show will conclude with a pyrotechnic display.
Right after the tree is lit in Boston Common, Mayor Menino will head to Arlington Street for the lighting of the trees along Commonwealth Avenue Mall. Hot chocolate and cookies will be available.
